Origin of the Betta fish

The origin of these fish dates back to Southeast Asia. Where they lived in rice fields, drainage ditches and some warm water ponds. Siam fighters have developed amazing adaptation mechanisms that provide them with the ability to survive in almost any environment.

One of the main characteristics that these fish have developed to adapt to the most hostile environments, is to be able to breathe oxygen directly from the air thanks to their special gills. Because of this, they can survive for short periods out of water or for a long time in very poor oxygen waters.

Betta splendens behavior

They are omnivorous animals, however, they have greater preferences as carnivores, especially living organisms such as zooplankton, other fish offspring, mosquito larvae and other insects.

The males of this species, when they see the female, extend their fins showing off and trying to conquer it as a previous activity to mate. If the female is also interested, she will darken her color and develop vertical lines known as “breeding bars“. The males subsequently build nests of bubbles on the surface of the water.

The male when establishing eye contact with another betta fish quickly deploys its fins and will attack the rival male, its behavior being quite aggressive, even with other fish of different species.
